The blue city in the Rif
The story
Tucked into the folds of the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is painted in a thousand blues — powder, indigo, periwinkle, sky. Theories differ on why: to repel mosquitoes, to mirror heaven, a legacy of the city's Andalusian and Jewish refugees. The effect is the same: a town that feels like walking through a watercolour.
There is little to 'do' here in the conventional sense, and that is precisely the point. You wander. You climb to the Spanish Mosque for sunset over the medina. You buy wool blankets and goat's cheese from the people who make them. You breathe mountain air.
We pair Chefchaouen with the cultural depth of Fes or the coast of Tangier, using it as the soft, slow heart of a northern journey.
Photograph the medina before the day-trippers arrive, with a local who grew up here.
A guided hike to Akchour's waterfalls and God's Bridge, lunch by the river.
Visit the workshops still producing the town's famous wool and natural pigments.
Founded in 1471 by Moorish and Jewish exiles from Spain — heard in the architecture and music.
A short climb for the definitive panorama over the blue rooftops at golden hour.
The best of Chefchaouen shifts with the calendar. Here's how we'd time your visit.
Wildflowers in the Rif and ideal hiking temperatures — our favourite season here.
Cooler than the cities thanks to altitude; lively but never overwhelming.
Clear light and quiet lanes once the summer crowds recede.
Atmospheric and occasionally snow-dusted; pack warm layers for the evenings.
A hand-picked selection — the addresses we'd book for you here.
