Where two seas and two continents meet
The story
Tangier has always been a city of intrigue — an 'international zone' that drew Matisse, the Beat writers, Yves Saint Laurent and a century of spies and bohemians. From the Kasbah you can see Spain across the strait, two seas folding into one another, Africa looking Europe in the eye.
After decades adrift, Tangier has been beautifully restored: a revived medina, a sweeping corniche, and a creative scene anchored by the new museums and the legendary Librairie des Colonnes. It is Morocco at its most worldly.
We treat Tangier as a sophisticated gateway — paired with Chefchaouen and the Roman ruins of the north for a journey heavy on culture and light on crowds.
Trace Bowles, Matisse and the Beats through the Kasbah, ending at a historic café.
A coastal drive to the Caves of Hercules where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
The Roman ruins of Lixus or whitewashed Asilah, both within easy reach.
Housed in the former sultan's palace, with one of the country's best collections.
Mint tea at the Café Hafa, perched over the strait since 1921.
The best of Tangier shifts with the calendar. Here's how we'd time your visit.
Fresh Atlantic air and blossoming gardens — a lovely time on the coast.
Warm and lively as Moroccans and Spaniards fill the corniche; book ahead.
Settled, golden and uncrowded — arguably the city's finest months.
Mild but breezy, with dramatic strait views and a cosy café mood.
A hand-picked selection — the addresses we'd book for you here.
